Who is the Preparatory Year in English for?

The English Foundation Course (Preparatory Year) has been designed for students who wish to study at ELTE or another European university, but do not yet have the necessary level of language competence and study skills to start a BA degree programme. With a minimum of 800 contact hours guaranteed, the English Preparatory Year can bring you up to speed in as little as two semesters.

Aims of the program

To offer a course with a strong emphasis on language improvement for preparing students for beginning their studies in English at a university outside their home country, regardless of whether they can or want to continue their studies at ELTE;

To equip students with the basic linguistic, cultural and study skills necessary for beginning BA level studies at ELTE (to be certified by ELTE with a special certificate of the fulfilment of the requirements of the preparatory course);

To bring students up to a level of language proficiency that would enable them to take one of the following internationally acknowledged (external) language exams at the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) B2 level, which is the minimum requirement for foreign students to start their studies on the ELTE English or American Studies BA programmes. This is equivalent to the following:

TOEFL PBT (Paper-based test): 453-497 or
TOEFL IBT (Internet-based test): 46-59 or
IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 5.5 or
CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference): B2

Please note that completion of this preparatory year only means automatic admission to the ELTE English or American Studies BA programmes if the student passes the B2-level language examination offered by the University at the end of the academic year (in mid June). The students may alternatively opt for an officially acknowledged external exam of the same level.

Duration of the program: 2 semesters
