A Magyar Bizantinológiai Társaság (MBT) tisztelettel meghív mindenkit a 2015. évi harmadik felolvasó ülésére május 5-én (kedden) 17.00 órára az Eötvös Collegium nagytermébe, amelyen Anastasia Maravela fog előadni.

Előadásának címe: “School texts” from Western Theban Monasteries: Classical Culture and Education in Late Antique Monastic Settings in Egypt.

Abstract

Excavations, licit and illicit, in the various Christian monasteries that flourished in the area of Western Thebes in Egypt from the sixth to at least the eighth century have yielded a rich harvest of Greek texts on ostraca, wooden tablets and graffito that fall outside the bounds of Christian literature. Some are late testimonies to the impact of classical literature and culture in Byzantine Egypt (Homer, Menandri Sententiae) while others preserve tongue-twisters, alphabets and cipher alphabets. They are normally edited under the label “school texts”, a term that implies some connection with the education of the youth. This paper will re-visit the Sitz im Leben of these texts and will argue for adjusting their generic description.
