Poncius Pilátus ártatlansága

That numerous Christian traditions try to exculpate Jesus’s Roman judge, Pontius Pilate, is well known. Yet this Christian theme seems never to have been compared with Judaic and Islamic traditions in which Pilate is, perhaps surprisingly, innocent. From a ‘Judaean’ voice in Justin Martyr’s First Apology to a seventeenth-century version of the Toledot Yeshu; from sura 4 of the Qur’an to Nicolas Cusanus’s fifteenth-century Sifting the Qur’an: Pilate’s hand in Jesus’s death is in question. This lecture will present several suggestive findings from Dusenbury’s recent book, The Innocence of Pontius Pilate: How the Roman Trial of Jesus Shaped History (Oxford University Press, 2021).

David Lloyd Dusenbury is a philosopher and historian of ideas. He has held research fellowships, most recently, at the University of Leuven and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; and he is currently a visiting professor at Eötvös Loránd University. His next book is titled I Judge No One: A Political Life of Jesus.
