We kindly invite you to participate, cover and help spread the word about the upcoming international conference and workshops titled „WWII – 80 Years After: Challenges for Historical Education and Commemoration” to be held on 2-3 June at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest, Hungary.

Organised by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS) and the National Remembrance Committee (NEB), the event brings together educators, history teachers, cultural professionals, and representatives of memorial institutions to reflect on the challenges of historical education and commemoration in the 21st century.

As we approach the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this conference will explore urgent questions about how to teach and commemorate difficult aspects of WWII history, including war crimes, genocide, forced labour, displacement, and occupation. We will also focus on how to meaningfully engage younger generations with no direct connection to wartime witnesses.

Registration is open now

The programme includes:

  • Panel discussions on conflicting memories across Europe and on innovative approaches to WWII education
  • A theatre play on Hungarian Gulag survivor Placid Olofsson
  • Workshops on using personal stories in teaching and preparing students for memorial site visits
  • A screening of Sound in the Silence, a documentary by ENRS, followed by a discussion
  • Hands-on sessions for educators on narrative-based and creative methods

The event will be held in English and Hungarian
