Currents in Education: Navigating Change in Languages, Cultures, and Communities
The Department of English Language Pedagogy of Eötvös Loránd University and the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE) held its international scientific conference ‘Currents in Education: Navigating Change in Languages, Cultures, and Communities’ on the Faculty of Humanities campus between 11 and 13 June 2025.

In addition to presenting the results of research in teaching and teacher education concerning intercultural, inclusive, and democratic current issues, the aim of the conference was to exchange experiences, strengthen our professional community and learn from each other. The main themes of the conference included intercultural communication, diversity, multilingualism, global competence and media literacy development, inclusive education and innovative pedagogies.

The speakers presented their latest research, shared their experiences and introduced new pedagogical methods and good practices. Lectures, poster presentations, workshops and roundtable discussions raised awareness of the knowledge and skills that are essential in today's ever-changing, diverse world and that are in great demand among teacher educators, teachers and students.

At the opening, Dr. Orsolya Réthelyi, Vice Dean of the Faculty and Dr. János Balázs Kenyeres, Director of the School of English and American Studies gave a welcome address. During the three days of the conference, the keynote speakers, Dr. Prue Holmes, Szilvia Szénási, and Dr. Darla K. Deardorff emphasized the importance of communication and cooperation among cultural communities and inspired the audience to maintain and protect their diverse inclusive societies.

The conference was very well attended, with over 300 participants from 37 countries.

In addition to the plenary sessions, conference participants could choose from 206 presentations, 17 workshops and 38 poster presentations on nine main themes. The conference included a city tour of Budapest, a Roma cultural walk in the 8th district, an excursion to Szentendre and a school visit to a student-centered, inclusive secondary school in Budapest. The three-day conference was a great success and was closed on 13 June with a concert by the Faculty Staff Singers of the Department of English Language Pedagogy.

The local organizing team of the conference included Ildikó Lázár, Rita Divéki, Anna Zólyomi, Gabriella Jenei, Cecilia Gall, and Anna Pereszlényi.

The conference was supported by the Eötvös Publishing House, the University Excellence Fund and the NRDIH Scientific Patronage Program.
