We wait for it, we prep ourselves, we imagine what it will be like, we organize for it, or we run away from it – how can an encounter come about? For various answers to this conundrum, check out this year’s student-curated programme blocks picked from obscure shorts by top directors. Meeting is a universal human need that bears within it the possibility of connection while it can also be a driver of, or obstacle to, momentous changes. The opportunities inherent in this everyday, yet still unpredictable event are presented in fiction, documentary, news or animated short films of different forms and vibes.
The selection shows three different approaches: Missed Connections is a lyrical exploration of the difficulties, or sometimes the lack, of encounters; Imagined Encounters digs into the contradiction between desire and reality, notion and expectation, with a splash of humour; Encounters Gone Astray interprets the collision between the individual and social institutions, communities in a broader framework, in an ironic and critical manner. Every meeting has an unpredictable outcome, which is exactly why they are worth taking head on.
The section, consisting of three short film selections, will be screened on September 21 (4:00 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., Toldi Cinema).
