The mission and vision of the Doctoral School of Linguistics

The School has been operating continuously as separate doctoral programmes since 1993 and as a school since 2000. It currently offers 22 doctoral programmes. The School aims to maintain research excellence and academic leadership, while preserving the broad spectrum and modernity of its training programmes in doctoral education in the Carpathian Basin. The School is committed to integrating its students into the national and international research communities while keeping their needs in mind. It aims to equip them with the theoretical and research methodological knowledge and skills to compete at a high level in international research as well as in higher education and research institutions at home and abroad. To this end, the School will provide student-centred training, a consistent supply of ELTE teachers and supervisors in various disciplines, a continuous increase in the number of students, supervisors and teachers from abroad, and will foster its international cooperation. The further expansion of its training portfolio in foreign working languages is also a medium-term objective. The School applies authentic theories and methods in its training and research, in line with international trends.

The doctoral school also functions as a research working group. Doctoral students not only listen to lectures and present papers on their research work here, but also carry out independent scientific activity, which is guided, especially initially, and involves writing shorter publications and reviews, too. Their work is discussed by programme participants, and teachers and students from other programmes are also invited to join these discussions. The idea of the unity of linguistics forms the basis of the school’s ethos. The interoperability of each programme reinforces the character of the research working group, with the idea of the unity of linguistics. As a rule, each programme should provide an introduction to the philology of the subject and a general or theoretical introduction to linguistics. This is followed by more specialised modules focusing on the subject of the dissertation.
