Dear Doctoral Candidate,
If the deadline for submitting your dissertation is August 31, 2026, and you have not yet initiated the doctoral process, you have until July 3, 2026, at the latest, to do so.
Information on initiating the doctoral process: https://btk.elte.hu/en/for-phd-students-beginning-in-2016-or-after
The dissertation may only be submitted once the Faculty Doctoral Council has approved the initiation of the doctoral procedure and the composition of the (public) defense committee.
The dissertation may only be submitted if it has passed the in-house defense, and the doctoral program has forwarded a copy of the minutes of the in-house defense to the Doctoral Office.
Before submission, a DOI identifier must be requested for the dissertation by emailing varkonyi.alma@btk.elte.hu and providing the following information: author’s name, author’s MTMT identifier, dissertation title, supervisor’s name, and doctoral school. The DOI identifier must be included on the declaration form as well as on the inside cover of the dissertation and the summaries.
The dissertation and all other required documents must be sent by email to varkonyi.alma@btk.elte.hu by midnight on August 31, 2026. The list of required documents can be found HERE.
Only one hard copy of the dissertation and the original signed declaration form has to be submitted in hard copy; all other documents may be sent via email, the summary booklets do not need to be printed either.
You may submit the hard copy during September too; however, electronic documents must be received by email by the August 31 deadline. The following options are available for submitting the hard copy:
in person at the Doctoral and Academic Affairs Office during office hours (Mondays and Wednesdays 9:00–12:00, 13:00–16:00; Fridays 9:00–12:00);
at the reception desk of Building A, addressed to the Doctoral Office;
by mail: ELTE BTK Doctoral and Academic Affairs Office, H-1088 Budapest, Hungary, Múzeum krt. 4/A
Documents do not need to be submitted on other storage media.
Frequently asked questions about documents:
The formatting requirements for the dissertation (length, font, line spacing, margins, etc.) are specified in the regulations of the doctoral schools - https://btk.elte.hu/phd/dokumentumok
Templates for the outside and inside cover pages can be found HERE.
No statements need to be included in the dissertation itself. The candidate declares on the declaration form that the dissertation is his/her own intellectual work; no separate declaration is required.
To the summaries the same formatting requirements apply as to the dissertation. There is no length restriction; they are generally 5–10 pages long and include the dissertation’s hypotheses, source base, methodology, and results, as well as a list of the author’s publications related to the topic.
Summaries must be submitted in both English and Hungarian.
For the supervisor’s statement there is no form; it may be formulated freely.
If obtaining a signature from the supervisor is difficult during the summer months, we also accept documents requiring the supervisor’s signature with ’DÁP’ or electronic signature. The supervisor may also submit his/her statement regarding the dissertation’s admissibility for public defense via email. In this case, the supervisor should send the statement from his/her official email address to varkonyi.alma@btk.elte.hu.
The short academic cv must be formulated in continuous text format, written in the third person singular. The cv will be read out at the public defense; a bullet-pointed resume format is not suitable for this purpose.
If you are submitting your dissertation via Google Drive due to the size of the file, please ensure that access is set to public, as in this case we will send the link to the opponents and committee members.
The hard copy should be hard bound with black cover and golden font colour, printed single-sided. If, due to the length of the dissertation, single-sided printing is not possible in a single volume, we also accept double-sided printing.
Summer holiday:
Alma Várkonyi will be out of office from August 1 to 23, 2026, during this period the issuance of DOI identifiers and responding to emails will be suspended. We recommend that you submit requests for DOI identifiers and any questions regarding the submission of your dissertation by July 31.
The Múzeum krt. 4/A building will be closed from August 10 to 14, 2026; during this time hard copies cannot be submitted neither in person nor at the reception desk of Building A.
